What Do Shadows Reveal About Intelligence?

Thema: Technik

Shadow Grammers explores intelligence as something emerging from bodies in motion rather than disembodied optimisation. The interactive installation turns visitors’ movements into the primary interface, projecting them as shadows onto layered square surfaces. As participants navigate the installation space, a shifting silhouette of shadows creates a dynamic play of occlusion and augmentation.

The installation foregrounds social, cultural, and intuitive modes of sense-making, rather than presenting intelligence as a rational, goal-oriented capacity. In the projected shadow space, participants must navigate not only the geometric structure but also one another—reading subtle cues, negotiating spatial boundaries. Here, perception itself becomes relational. Intelligence is enacted through shifting collectives of bodies, revealing how movement, atmosphere, and intercorporeal awareness often exceed what can be formally represented or predicted.

In contrast to machine learning algorithms that demand stable, formalised inputs, the installation foregrounds the instability and ambiguity of shadows—expressions shaped by context, unconscious gesture, and relational movement. Shadow Grammars argues for intelligence as an embodied, intersubjective, culturally situated process—not a disembodied technologically mediated abstraction. By inviting participants into a performative ecology of light, material, and movement, the work proposes that intelligence is not something we possess, but something we continually enact with and through our environments.
