How do pre-service music education students conceptualize social justice in music education?

Thema: Gesellschaft und Kultur
Schlagworte: Bildung, Musik und Soziales
Altersgruppe: ab 18 Jahre
Zielgruppe: Barrierefrei, In English und für Gruppen & Schulklassen

Social justice has become more prominent in music education, but research on social justice concepts in music teacher training programs is still under explored. This presentation gives an overview of the doctoral research project “Social Justice and Self-Efficacy in Music Teacher Training Studies” and provides participants a self-reflective interactive component looking at Anti-Bias Education.

Pedagogy Framework

This study asks three core questions:
1. How do pre-service music education students conceptualize social justice in music education?
2. Do their attitudes and experiences support the inclusion of social justice concepts in music
teacher training?
3. And how do perspectives align or diverge between Austrian and American students?

A mixed-methods design is used, which begins with an empirical survey and is followed by
semi-structured interviews. All Austrian universities with music teacher training (ME/IME) programs are
invited to participate, as well as an equivalent number of U.S. universities from the states of Maine,
Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

The survey aim to collect data on bachelors music education students’:

● Pedagogical self-efficacy
● Attitudes toward social justice
● Self-reported social justice proficiency
● Prospective utilization of social justice in teaching music

One goal of the study is to develop a Social Justice Pedagogy Framework that provides a versatile
foundation applicable for use across different music teacher training systems – with the goal to further
develop it as a workshop and curricular resource that can be utilized at varying levels of music education.
